ABOUT US

In and at the Heart of Buffalo

As the first church formed here, back in 1812, First Church prides itself on being in and at the heart of the Buffalo. That means a couple of things. As a Christian congregation, we profess and practice core convictions to love God and our neighbor. That is a familiar religious ideal. But we also are committed to the well-being of all people in Buffalo, regardless of your faith or whether you practice a religion at all. We exist for the common good.

First Church is a congregation, vibrant community gathering place, and architectural landmark. Here, individuals of all belief systems and walks of life are welcome to connect, share, learn, serve, and grow.

Faith is at the core of First Church, but our commitment to the common good does not end there. First Church has additional dimensions to serve all facets of the human condition. Whether you seek spiritual nourishment, connection, volunteer opportunities, a forum to explore social and philosophical issues, or an inspiring space for self-reflection, we invite you to visit our beautiful building at the crossroads of Buffalo’s Allentown and West Side neighborhoods. We frequently host public concerts, book discussions, community service opportunities, and discussion forums on topics of broad interest. Our inspiring church sanctuary is also regularly open to anyone seeking a place of quiet retreat.

Here are just some of the community activities First Church hosted in the past:

  • Public  “labyrinth walk” and quiet space for prayer, reflection, and contemplation

  • Sacred Sites open house in affiliation with Buffalo PorchFest celebrations

  • Master Gardener’s citywide annual spring sale

  • Convention of the American Guild of Organists and performance by winner of the Quimby Young Organist Competition

  • Allentown Association public gathering to provide input and feedback on proposed siting of brewery and tasting room on Allen Street

First Church is likewise home to numerous organizations that meet the deepest needs within our community. Housed at First Church are nonprofits like The Serendipity Thrift Shoppe operated by the Buffalo AIDS Plus Fund of WNY and educational initiatives like Houghton College’s special associate of arts degree program for first-generation immigrants and refugees. Through our many partners and the social good they promote, our congregation is better able to live out its mission to meet the physical, intellectual, and spiritual needs of all who enter our doors.

In summary, the committed members of First Church have adapted and evolved in response to the same forces and currents of change that have shaped the city we call home. Today, as a member congregation of Presbyterian Church (USA), we are compelled by our faith to play an active role in the continued revitalization of Buffalo by serving all who people it, no matter their birthplace, race, gender or sexual identity, economic status, or creed.
