COMMUNITY

The dictionary defines commons as “land or resources belonging to or affecting the whole of a community.” In that sense, it can be said that First Church is moving along the path of becoming a commons for the common good.

That wasn’t always the case. Although First Church has a long and proud history of caring for its neighbors, for much of its existence, First Church’s identity and purpose was defined by a specific religious affiliation.

In recent years, that identity has begun to morph into something new and exciting. Today, with half of its physical plant in use by area nonprofits, First Church sees its future very much built upon a hybrid identity: a robust worshipping congregation aligned with resident partners working in synergistic ways to promote the prosperity and well-being of our city. In short, a commons for the common good.

Located at historic Symphony Circle since 1888, First Presbyterian Church is a vibrant, inclusive house of Christian worship, and a community gathering place where individuals of all belief systems and walks of life are welcome to connect, share, learn, serve, and grow through any of our many public classes and programs, racial and economic justice initiatives, and spiritual and worship services.
